Sell on ONDC: Know About
From the Seller’s Point of View
Why ONDC Evolved?
Online shopping has become really important in our everyday lives. People all over India are using their smartphones to shop online because it’s easy and affordable. India’s e-commerce industry is growing rapidly, and by 2025, it’s expected to be worth over $111 billion.
However, many small sellers and local businesses are not able to take advantage of this opportunity. They either don’t know how to use the internet for selling their products or they feel discouraged by the big competition from companies like Amazon and Flipkart. These big companies often promote their own products and sellers, making it difficult for the small players to succeed.
That’s why there was a need for an open network like ONDC, which can help small sellers and businesses participate in e-commerce without being controlled by the big players.
From the Seller’s Point of View
What is the Scope of ONDC?
ONDC is bringing positive changes to e-commerce in India. It wants to make things fair for all sellers by giving them equal visibility on an open network. 98% of PIN codes in India are now being accessed by existing e-commerce platforms. The government supports this decentralised platform and wants to disrupt the dominance of big e-commerce companies. They aim to create a community where buyers can discover sellers and make orders, no matter which platforms or apps they use.
Following the success of the UPI “Project ONDC” wants to build a unified e-commerce network where all sellers, customers, and logistics service providers can easily connect, without any unfair monopolistic practices.
ONDC plans to bring over 10 million sellers onto this initiative, who previously had no choice but to pay high commission fees to popular marketplaces just to get their products noticed.
Within the ONDC Network, there are two types of seller modules – Nodes:
Marketplace Seller Node (MSN)
A Marketplace Seller Node (MSN) is like a shop in a big online marketplace. It doesn’t create or make any products itself, but it provides a platform where other sellers can showcase their goods and services. People can visit the MSN and see what the sellers have to offer. If they like something, they can buy it directly from the seller. The MSN earns money by helping with the transactions and providing the marketplace platform.
Inventory Seller Node (ISN)
An Inventory Seller Node (ISN) is like a digital store run by a seller who creates or makes their own products and sells them. Unlike an MSN, the ISN doesn’t feature products or services from other sellers; it only offers the items produced or manufactured by the seller operating the ISN. It’s a platform where the seller can showcase their own inventory and customers can purchase directly from them.
How Selling on ONDC Looks Like?
The Sellers can become part of the ONDC network by using a compatible ONDC Seller App. When they join, they get the opportunity to reach a large customer base in India through popular ONDC Buyer Apps like PayTm, Yatri, IDFC First, and others.
Here’s how it works: a customer searches for a product using the ONDC Buyer App. The app then matches the customer with relevant sellers based on keywords, category, price preferences, and location. Once the buyer chooses a product, it goes into their cart on the buyer app. The seller is notified about the order through their seller app.

How Seller Network Nodes (ISN) work on ONDC?
Democratising digital commerce of India
Technically, the Seller Node (SN) within ONDC operates as a component of the overall architecture. Here is a high-level overview of how the SN functions on ONDC:
Registration and Onboarding: Sellers interested in joining the ONDC network as SN’s go through a registration and onboarding process. They provide the necessary information and credentials to establish their identity and eligibility.
Catalog Management: Sellers upload and manage their product or service catalog through the SN. This includes adding product details, images, pricing, inventory quantities, and other relevant information. The SN ensures that the catalog is well-structured and easily searchable.
Order Processing: When a customer places an order through the ONDC platform, the SN receives the order details. It validates the availability of the product, calculates the final price (including taxes and shipping), and generates an order confirmation.
Payment Processing: The SN handles payment processing, securely capturing the customer’s payment information and initiating the transaction. It ensures that the payment is processed smoothly, using the designated payment gateway integrated with the ONDC platform.
Fulfilment and Logistics: Once the payment is confirmed, the SN initiates the fulfilment process. This involves coordinating with the seller to pack and ship the product to the customer’s specified address. The SN provides updates on the order status and shipment tracking information.
Customer Support: The SN offers customer support services, addressing inquiries, resolving issues, and ensuring a satisfactory buying experience. It serves as a point of contact for customers, handling returns, refunds, and any post-purchase assistance.
Integration with ONDC APIs: The SN integrates with the ONDC platform using relevant APIs (Application Programming Interfaces). These APIs enable seamless communication between the SN and other components of ONDC, such as the buyer application, payment gateway, and order management system.
By functioning as a crucial intermediary, the SN enables the smooth operation of the marketplace within ONDC, connecting sellers and buyers while ensuring efficient catalog management, order processing, payment handling, and customer support.
